A Message from Sultan Esmail Kiram II

ASSALAMU ALAYKUM WA RAHMATULLAHI WA BARAKATUHU.

We must return to our foundations and become the great and proud people of our traditions. We must take responsibility for our children and their future in all our actions.

I therefore call on all the people of the Sultanate to contribute 30 minutes of your day, outside of prayer, in doing something good for your neighbor, your child, or a stranger. Read to them, talk about our great past, visit a historic site, teach them a traditional song or dance, or whatever else you can pass down. Volunteer your services in the preservation of our culture.

By the grace of the Almighty Allah, we shall together bring peace and prosperity to our kingdom.

Wassalam.

Sultanate Legitimacy

During the almost 500 years since the founding of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo, there have been several intervals of time when disputes arose regarding which man is the legitimate Sultan. These disagreements resulted in damage to the Sultanate, including outbreaks of civil war, weakened administration, and other harms, including poisonings of Sultans or Crown Princes.

Today, many Filipinos and most world citizens are living in a time of confusion regarding the multiple claimants to the Sultanate of Sulu. Who is the legitimate Sultan? One of the purposes of this website is to review the lineage of the Sultanate, and to demonstrate why Esmail Kiram II was crowned in 2001 as the true, legitimate Sultan of Sulu and North Borneo.

Inhabiting the shores and coast of the many islands that constitute the Sulu Archipelago, the people of the province naturally take to a seafaring life. Long before Miguel Lopez de Legaspi colonized Cebu, foreign traders were already familiar with Sulu waters. When Manila and Cebu were yet small settlements, Jolo was already a city, the most important in the Philippines, with trade flourishing between its inhabitants and Chinese merchants.
